Nostalgia

I am asking myself how many years apart?
Our childhood is giving back to moon and stars
The lovely poems which we have exchanged
Only in memory there’s something remains

Far away from homeland why I always dream
My ancient school my classmates in team
Up and down we bike in different places
Life is rosy we are innocent and fresh

Beautiful souvenirs make my thoughts wandering
Admire the nature my nostalgia is showing
Where’s the roof of my house? It’s far away
Looking for somewhere the little girl from the old days

Nostalgie

AN IDEA MAKES MEMORY
A MEMORY BECOMES HERITAGE

Đoàn Linh Cảm

I received a phonecall from Saigon, saying that this coming Sunday an alumni reunion of Albert Sarraut School would be held at No.8 Hai Ba Trung District of Hanoi. These alumni used to be in the elementary classes of Albert Sarraut School. All at once, I was startled by the unexpected feelings from the the past rushing through so continuously that I even forgot where I was going to, what I was thinking and doing at that time.

Then I quickly went to see my friend- as a Chairman of Albert Sarraut School Alumni Club. It turned out to be the 50-year anniversary since this school withdrew from Vietnam, I say “completely” . Using simple finger counting, it was in 1965. Why is the year 1965?. Memories flashed back to me. Ah, I got it. After Dien Bien Phu’s Victory, the capital was freed after the signing of the 1954 Geneve Accords. France agreed to withdraw its forces from Hanoi and after 300 days, entirely from 17th Parallel. However, French Government offered to sign with Vietnam a so-called “cultural concord” which allowed Albert Sarraut School continue to stay here in 10 years. Therefore, that’s so right: 10 years after 1955 is the year 1965 and it is the year when Albert Sarraut School offcially withdrew from Vietnam. Until now is after 50 years when these old people have just had a chance to meet each other- considered to be equal to a complete half of human life span.

My friends used to describe me as a vagabond. Poet I do not make any arguments against it because I am a real vagabond. However, my travelling footsteps do not wander back to memories, but stop with my memories.

I was suddenly reminded of a French proverb‘“Tout passe, tout casse, seuls les souvenirs restent vivaces”. Everything passes, everything disappeares, only memories stay forever.

As planned, on the 28th of October, I went to No. 8 Hai Ba Trung to reunite with other alumni of Albert Sarraut School. There were so many people, more than 200 alumni in total from every corner of the world, such as from Saigon, Hai Phong, Nam Dinh and even from France,…

On that day, I felt I was coming home, but seemingly lost. Ah, …I was so lonely. There were no classmates of mine. The littlest student is now 70 years old. Now they all have grandchilre. I am even 12 years older than them. There was none of my classmates among 200 people. Fortunately, some guys knew me before and said ” Is this you? You are much thinner and older now”.

A greeting is not only a few words of comfort, but also is a memory. It is a living memory.

I myself went to see that flamboyant tree. It has just planted, not yet bloomed. At the base of the trunk, there are two pieces of stones on which these following words are written into French:” This tree has been planted by Albert Sarraut School Alumni Club. The symbol is the root deeply rooted under the ground and the time, a close friendship between French and Vietnamese”

I was so touched  to write a poem of 8 sentences , please see the attachment as follows

And now I realize I am too old.

Uhm, I am getting older then ever but I am still full of memories, keep reminiscing about the past a lot.

Still thinking..,still waiting and will be present on the occasion of celebrating another reunion in 10 years, at that time the flamboyant tree will be vivid red under the blue sky.

As a result, there comes a heritage for the human being.
